Job description

Centrale Nantes is a leading engineering school that graduates engineers, master students and doctoral candidates from academic

programs based on the most up-to-date developments in science and technology and the best practices in management.

Ecole Centrale Nantes is seeking a Research engineer in hydrodynamics for floating wind turbine  to work at LHEEA Lab (CNRS joint research Unit) to be involved in the wave tank experiments.

Your tasks will be to:

  • Study the model configuration and the choice/generation of test conditions

The experimental model is being designed in Ecole Centrale Nantes. The mooring system and test conditions (environmental conditions, wind turbine controller) need to be studied and defined at model scale. This will be done in agreement with the different partners, industry standards, and scientific problems at stake.

  • Be involved in the team carrying out the experimental campaign in the wave tank

The real-time hybrid experimental approach implies a real-time simulation, performed with a simulation tool (i.e. OpenFAST [2]). Coupled simulation need to be performed and all input files need to be prepared and tested for the real-time simulations. A strong involvement is also needed during the tests in the wave tank.

  • Data processing and analysis, scientific writing

  • Finally, the measurements will be processed and analysed. The coupled response of experimental models under waked wind conditions will be studied. Fully-coupled simulations will be performed with OpenFAST and compared to the wave tank measurements. The analysis of this data will then be used for publication.

Objectives / Expected results

  • Construction of an experimental database in wave tank conditions

  • Comparison of the experimental measurements with fully-coupled simulations

  • Work in a collaborative environment through the active participation to international consortia.

  • Write project reports and deliverables

  • Write scientific publications

Job requirements

Required qualifications are related to:

  • Knowledge of the marine environment (mandatory)

  • Experience in experimental campaigns and data analysis

  • Experience of dynamic simulation of floating wind turbine

  • Good knowledge of a scientific language (Python, Fortran, Matlab, …)

  • Interest in ocean engineering problems

Personal qualities:

  • Autonomous and dynamic

  • Ability to interact with researchers working on numerous and varied research topics

Level required:

A PhD in in ocean engineering, fluid dynamics or physical oceanography, with basic knowledge of wave mechanics. You benefit from professional experience of 1 to 5 years (beginner accepted)

Working conditions:

  • 12-month fixed-term contract, with the possibility of renewal - open to contract staff and civil servants

  • Full-time position - based in Nantes

  • Flexible working hours

  • Flexible work cycles (possibility of working 4.5 days)

  • RTT + additional vacations

  • Telecommuting possible

  • Teleworking allowance

  • Free parking

  • 75% transport reimbursement

  • Sustainable mobility bonus (if cycling or car-pooling)

Wage : in accordance with State civil service pay scales - Category A
